I currently have an AMD xp socket A cpu and mboard. I built the computer a couple of years ago and I bought a highly recommended (at the time) cpu heatsink and fan. The only problem is that this thing screams like a jet! Not a problem when it was in a spare room but now I need to move it into a room where noise would be an issue. A couple of guys at work just got new machines and you can barely hear the thing running. Can someone recommend a quiet solution that will still keep this AMD chip cooled down? Thanks.

Just about anything from Zalman would be a lot better. Even their older "flower" HSFs work pretty well.

Strongly recommend a Thermalright SI-97. I had the same problem with an old slk with a high cfm fan that I couldn't stand. IMHO this is the best socket A solution tho I'll qualify by saying I haven't used the one in your post. I used a panaflo L1 on a fan controller to trim the noise. I have an xp2500 oc'd at 200mhz and my temps are about 38degC at load with Artic Silver 5.

HERE is the sink at Coolerguys, but they are available at SVC etc...

thanks for asking this. it was one of the two questions i had to ask tonight; i had bought a delta fan back in the day for my socket a and now just want the comp. to be a stable workstation. unfortunately, with that verdammt fan i can't hear myself think
