I heard the newer Athlon XP retail fans are as quiet as the P4. Do they sell these separately from the CPU?

Which Athlon XPs have these quiet fans? What are the specs? I'm looking to get a new processor and refit the processor that I have w/ a quieter fan.

Are these quiet?

I've quieted down my XP2100+ system using an 80mm CPU fan but its actually the noisest fan of them all.

I'm using a single fan 250W ATX supply for the XP2100+, GeForce3, two ATA100/7.2k RPM HDs, and two optical drives. This cut down the heat dramatically as well as the noise.

I recently purchased 2 retail 1800+. Each was packaged with different heatsinks; one had a fan running @ 3000rpm, the other at 3800rpm. Both were extremely quiet, as compared with my retail 2000+ which had a 5000rpm fan. none the less, these heatsinks are inadequate as their respective cpu's reach temps in excess of 55C.

i have the Coolmaster Aero7+ and it looks cool, has good performance, and is not bad as far as quietness goes (they sell for a good price). just look around and check the db. thats how you know what the noise level will be. the aeroflows are said to be good.

if we're talking quiet and comparing with stock, my FalconRock II is virtually silent [25Db] and somewhat better than sock cooling [about 5C or so at idle and 10C on load]

I built a couple of retail 2000+'s the other day, and took some shots of the new quiet HSF's:

These puppies are quiet. They ended up in a case with a quiet-running Antec TruePower330, two 18dB NMB 80mm case fans, and very quiet Seagate 7200.7 hard drives. Even with the case open, it was hard to hear the HSF running against the normal background noise of the office. AMD has definitely improved them.

Your best bet would be to make a deal with someone who's buying a retail AMD soon, because I haven't seen that precise model on the open market (the distinctive fan would've been noticable). Or just get yourself the excellent Thermalright SK-7 and plop a Panaflo L1A on top of it (SVC.com has them for a combined $23).

If you do get an SK-7, note that it slides back & forth on its clip a little. Before you fasten it down, you should make sure to slide it as far away from the raised, solid-plastic end of the CPU socket as the clip will permit, and do a visual check to make sure the base is clear of the solid end of the socket, like it is here.

I'm using a Thermalright AX-7 w/ a thermaltake 80mm Smart Fan (Smart Fan 1) w/ the thermistor removed and short circuited for maximum flow (4500 RPM, not extremely noisy but it gets on your nerves somewhat).

that looks just like the one I got for my 1800+. does it run at 3000rpm also? I dont think it does a good job as my cpu temp reaches 55C.
