I guess a lot of people here have experience with Newegg. Not all the descriptions have the decibels listed. I am buying an AMD1600 for someone and wanted a quiet fan. I would rather get the whole deal at newegg but have no idea which heatsink combo would be good and quiet. There will be no overclocking so that is not an issue.

i'd go with the retail package, then.....you get the extra warranty, and a pretty decent hs/fan combo. the only minor drawback is that the clip is pretty stiff. but it runs pretty quiet and does a good job cooling the processor

The retail fan is very quiet. Whomever you're buying for should have no problems. Just keep the case cables tidy and use two high quality, quiet 80mm case fans.

It's even quieter if you replace the fan, which I have done on both my 1800+'s. 16.1 dba apiece now.

Thanks for the replies. Now if I can only find a muffler for the noisy quantum drive I am putting in this computer I will be set.

Seagate Barracuda IV drives are *very* quiet... I believe there were a few hotdeals (forum) on the 80GB version for less than $100

Btw, quiet is entirely subjective... there are a few people who posted saying the retail hs/f was quiet, but other people think its loud.

Not really, those HSF's have half hight deltas on them which create an annoying whine. It really isn't that loud but it is most definantly not quiet.

Agreed AMD retail fans are whiney, at least the last few XP's I've used came with whiney retail fans, P4 retail fans are MUCH quieter, I'd probably go with their Alpha PAL8045, with one of those Enermax Purple/Clear fans with speed adjustment... (newegg carries both items)

If you are looking for a quiet 80mm fan you may want to check out the
OCZ Technology Goliath SE HSF. This received a favorable review at
I Am Not A Geek Dot Com!.

You can pick this fan up at Newegg.com for $31.95 Shipped!

I ordered mine about a couple days ago, I will let you know how it goes! I
am in the process of selling my ThermalRight SK-6 w/ 38CFM, 7000RPM fan. I am
getting around 50C temps OC'ed from 1.53Ghz to 1.62Ghz. Not bad. Now
I am sitting here awaiting.

Here is also a nice video review at 3DGameman.com

This should be a special fan!

Dont bother with a Goliath SE HSF, its just as bad as the Retail HSF. The only way to get an AMD system truely quiet is to buy an AX-7 and PAPST 19dba fan at 25.5cfm.

AMD must alternate HS fan manufacturers then because the ones I have are most definitely not half height Delta's. More like Coolermaster knockoffs, down to the very shape of the blade. I have one running in my livingroom for my MP3 box. Even with the two 80mm casefans it's absolutely unnoticeable.

bdog231,
Do you have personal experience with the Goliath SE? The two reviews that I have
posted convinced me enough that this fan was legit! Usually 3DGameMan.com has
excellent reviews.

Now if the fan isn't up to par with the heatsink then I can always upgrade if I would
like. Nowadays, the the type of fan is the vital key to maintaining a cool CPU. The
heatsink is nothing more than a sponge (by absorbing all of the heat from the CPU)!

What a reasonable quiet HSF w/ Heatsink under $50? I may still continue to look
if the peformance isn't up to my standards!
