Hey guys, I have a PNY 6800GT, but I was wondering which 6800GT is the quietest. I've heard the MSI was pretty silent, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm also looking at the Asus 6800GT, but I don't know how loud or quiet it is. Any input?

heh....I was going to suggest the same thing. The gigabyte 6800nu is fanless, their 6800GT has a fan on the back of the card, but if I had to be you coudl run the card just fine without it if you have good airflow in your case

M4H,
I was looking at the Gigabyte 6800NU and wondered if you have seen anywhere the softmod success rate on it? The review from the link above says it does 405/880 and would seem to be a great deal for $285 if it mods. Just wondering if anyone has one of these or have seen anyone on another forum who has tried to unlock the pipes. Thanks for any info. -rX

Thanks for the suggestions guys! However, this card is not for me and I do not want to do any mods whatsoever since I'm building this machine for someone else. I'm looking for a stock 6800GT that runs as quiet as possible. To give you more information, this card is going into a Shuttle XPC SN95G5.

Here are the full specs:
$316.00 - AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K 90nm (939)
$268.00 - OCZ Gold Edition Rev3 Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3700
$319.00 - Shuttle XPC Black Barebone System for Socket 939 AMD Athlon 64 CPU, Model SN95G5
$23.99 - SAMSUNG 16X DVD Drive Black
$91.99 - Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS PCI Sound Card, Model "SB0350" -RETAIL
$408.00 - Asus GeForce 6800 V9999 GE/TD 256MB DDR3/AGP-8X/TV-Out/DVI <not offical yet>
$182.00 - Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive
$24.00 - Shuttle PF40 XPC Carrying Case -OEM
$65.00 - PN15 - IEEE802.11g Wireless LAN Module
$19.99 - PC12 - Internal USB 2.0 Card Reader
$94.00 - Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition With Service Pack 2 -OEM
$23.99 - Norton AntiVirus 2005

Total = $1,852.94 w/ shipping

That's all of it. Every little detail.

This machine should run pretty cool and quiet, and has some nice head room if he wants to overclock it in the future.

As with all softmods, it's a YMMV thing. There's been lots of success thus far though.

JackBurton, that ASUS is defintely not worth it. For less you can get a full-fledged GT model.

If you're not going for the softmod route, get the Gigabyte single-fan GT with the heatpipe. It does fit into a Shuttle as shown, and apparently is cool enough to be stable.

M4H, the Asus I have listed is the full fledged 6800GT. Asus just names their cards retarded names to confuse people I guess. But it does run at 350/1000 with (256bit) 256MB memory.

I've also looked at the Gigabyte 6800GT and I'd definitely get that card for a typical PC. But with the Shuttle case, the fan would be pointing straight at the sound card and I think it may have issues cooling it properly. Basically, it's pulling air from the hottest part of the case. With the other GTs, the fans are in their normal location and with the Shuttle case, it should allow the video card to pull cool air in from the outside since the video card is right in front of the side air vents.

Hmm. No one makes a single-slot direct-vent one OEM, do they? It could suck the air right in from the side vent and pump it out the back.
