Hoping a few of you might share your opinions on my cooling "problem".
I've never really went to extremes to keep my machine cool, but I do belive cooling is a good thing. For the past few years i've been running my machine (PIII 600/440BX) in a PC Power & Cooling Mid-Tower w/ their Turbo-Cool ATX 300 PS, and 2 Turbo-Cool Aux. fans (35CFM). This has always worked well for me (as far as cooling is concerned), although these fans produce noise like no other (the system measured ~80 db @ 1 meter).
Well a few days ago, my PS fan started on its last legs, so I ordered 3 replacement fans, since all the fans are ~3 years old. However instead of re-ordering what I already had, I picked up a set of Silencer Aux. Fans (28CMF), in hopes of taming the extreme noise polution. After installing the PS fan (w/ a little soldering), and the case fans, I started up the beast again, with some suprising results. On the up side, the noise was almost completely gone (now if I could just shut up that 10K RPM HD), but on the down side the case temperature jumped more then just a few degrees.
Previously my on-board monitoring (a single "system wide" temperature) showed @ idle ~28 Celcius, with a maximum temp of 32 Celcius under heavy loads. However, with the new fans installed, the machine is idling @ 34 Celcius, to 40 Celcius under heavy load. Unsure of how accurate the onboard monitoring was, I added a "external" temperature probe, positioned on the outside of the HD Cage (which "hangs" mid way between the Processor and my Radeon 8500). While its readings where a little lower, it still shows 30 to 35 Celcius temperatures, which is a little concering to me.
So, the real question is, do you think this is a little to hot, or should I just be happy with the reduced noise and go on about my buisness? The numbers seem a little high to me, but then again I see people running P4's and Athlon XP's without any additional case cooling... maybe i'm just getting a little parinoid in my old age
I appreciate any replies,
