Quiet XP Mobile HS/Fan

I've got a Soyo Dragon Plus V1.0 with a AMD Mobile 2600+ running at 10x200Mhz,
and my temps on a generic aluminum HS with a fairly noisy fan are about 50C. I
also have some copper heatsinks that have a kingwin 70mm 5500 RPM fan that
is even louder than that.

I didn't really notice how loud it was til I started swapping all the case fans I had with
some panaflo L1-A's, in 3 of the PC's in the office.

Can anyone suggest a relatively good solution? Panaflo doesn't sell 70MM fans, and
the only place I found that have 70mm-80mm converters are out of them. I'd like to
reuse the copper heatsink, especially someone has a suggestion for a 70mm fan that is
as quiet as a panaflo or has got a stash of 70mm-80mm converters.

Use the copper heatsink with the 5500 rpm fan and buy a Zalman fan speed controller, to dial in just the right noise/cooling performance you like. Remember those coolers were probably designed for the loud/fast fans and when you turn the fan speed down or replace the fan with a quieter one your temps will climb.

The Zalman will be a low cost option($4.00 most place) to try or just replace your cooler with something better like a Thermalright or Zalman product

And watch his Proc overheat?

If the heatsink came with high speed fan that?s what it was designed to use, it won't be very effective with a fan that moves less air. If you want something with low noise/low RPM your going to have to get a better heatsink and 80mm fan. The ALX-800 with a Panaflow L or M1A is a good choice.

Appreciate the replies. Obviously, if I switch out the fan on the Copper HS, I'll have to run some sort of monitoring software for a couple of weeks to see how it does. Suggestion for the Soyo Dragon Plus under either Linux or XP (Or Solaris X86 if such a thing exists).

An interesting note about the ALX-800. The fan they spec with that is a 5700 rpm, 52.6Dba fan so I"m confused about your comment about turning down the fan on my heatsink, or buying an ALX800 and then slapping a Panaflo L-1A on it.

I think I'm going to dump the aluminum HS and at run the Copper one with the current 5500 RPM fan and see how it does. Then I can hopefully find the right solution to get the noise level down.

As has already been suggested, the Spire Whisperock or the near identical Speeze Falconrock would be excellent choices- whichever is cheaper at the moment. Newegg carries both.

Don't let the low price fool you- they're solid performers, with very little noise, an honest bargain...
