Quiet x800xl cooling...

I upgraded one of my machines from a passive-cooled Radeon 9600 to
an ATI x800xl (AGP) and the noise of the standard fan is too much.

Please recommend a few video cooling products for me to checkout
which work well on my card and are much quieter than the stock fan.

Just be careful 🙂 Nothing sucks like ruining a video card!

*ok, some things suck worse. A lot worse. I am sure all you clever people out there could think of something witty to stick here, but I am tired, so I am going to bed!
 
Use ati tools to customize your fan speed based on tempeture. The fan should be whisper quiet while out of a game.
Unless of course it bothers you while playing a game as well.

And yeah the ATI Silencer 5 Rev. 2 is great. I have my XL at 460/1150 and it has never broken 54C at full load and idles at ~36-38C. Compare that to before when my XL idled at 48-50C and peaked at 82-84C at full load.
 
Be sure to check out some of the comments over at slient PC review. There were quite a few negative comments about the AS coolers. Some would quit working, and you wouldn't know it, and would kill the video card. I do agree that exhausting the warn air from the case like they do is much better, but the comments scared me. For now, I'm just dealing with the noise, which isnt too bad. Just trying to decide if I should get the Zalman, or nothing, or risk it on the Arctic cooler.
 
My AC ATI Silencer 5 rev 2 worked great for a few months (quiet, great temps, improved overclocking headroom about 5%), then it died and took my video card with it (which ATI replaced). Now Artic Cooling won't send me a replacement cooler, they say to get it from the vendor who sold me the cooler. The vendor says it's the manufacturers job to support.

It's still the best cooler out there, but be warned, it may crap out.
 
How's the ATI silencer 4? I see a few good deals on these used. Although the 5 for $33 from newegg isn't bad.

 
I ordered, cancelled, then re-ordered the Arctic ATI Silencer 5R2 today.

It seems to do its job very well and it's only $40 bucks.
Many people are rating it well, some have bad experiences.

I'll see how it goes. I am surprised you can kill cards if the cooler dies.
Every time I have done anything similar, forgetting to plug in a fan, etc,
the machine crashes and the part is (apparently) unharmed. I've not
lost any parts in this way over 10+ years building my own machines.
 
I should clarify. The Cooler killed the fan header on my x800xl, not the entire card. As you said, it just couldn't run 3D apps without locking up. I send my card to ATI to have the fan header repaired, and they just sent me a new card. For resale value purposes I didn't want to be stuck with a video card that couldn't run its own cooler.
 
If you have an Intel D875PBZ you will want to modify your Arctic ATI Silencer 5R2.

A large green capacitor behind the AGP slot is in the way. The first time I installed
the 5R2 I just jammed it in and noted the problem. Doing this multiple times will
probably damage the motherboard, because there is simply not enough room to
correctly install the cooler.

The past couple days I've moved the mobo/vidcard to other cases and felt it was
time to fix the issue. I use a fine serrated kitchen knife to saw some of the clear
plastic off the back so the capacitor can come inside (closer to the fan).
 
Like others have said you can adjust when the fan kicks into high gear. I have a powercolor X800XL and I did the artic silver route, now unless my room is extremely hot I've noticed that even when gaming for hours the fan rarely kicks into blowdryer mode.

Before doing this I think my load temps were around 80 C, now I rarely get to the mid 70's.
