I'm trying to get the quietest case for my Dad, who is not using his computer due to noise... price does matter, but I have no time to do extensive modifications.
Any suggestions what brand, or better specific case, is a good deal on the market now? Preferrably a manufacturer that actually compares dB values with the competition.

I will need to upgrade lots of stuff in his system but do not plan to overclock and if there is some way to build a system without ANY fans that would be interesting. Are silent power supplies available?

I know you said "ready made" solution but if you buy a case, then you will need to move over everything from the old case. My "2 cents" because I have been through this before. Since your going to have to do the work anyway, change out the fans throughout the case and you will see a drastic reduction in noise.

I have had just about every quiet fan except for a Papst so my recommendation is go to SVC for 5 of these NMBs @ $11.00. Assumming you have a socket 370 or A, then get a GC68 HSF also. Replace the GC68 fan with one of the five. Another for the power supply. That leaves you three for other places (one in back at min).

The other noise producer is the HD. If he has a loud HD and you don't mind switching it out, then get a Seagate Barracuda IV. If you don't want to swap the drive then get a Silent Drive.

The problem seems to be the power supply fan... (it was easy to determine because that's the only fan in the system! --this is an old socket7 that still works just fine with the exception of the noise). I will take your advice to improve my rather noisy, occasionally overclocked box, by switching to the silent drive and quiet case/processor fans -- but would appreciate any advice on what to do with an old AT power supply. The water system looks great too, but is probably too time consuming for me right now.

Thanks for your comments and let me know if there is an easy trick to silence an existing (AT) power supply!
