Quiet SCSI - is there such a beast?

I'm looking for a scsi harddrive that will run on my adaptec 2940uw (68 pin) that's quiet. Are there such drives out there? I don't need much space, as this would be an OS/apps drive, so 9 gigs would probably do fine, 18 would also be good if the drives remain inexpensive. My current 7200 rpm Quantum Viking is on my last nerve by whining all the time (and being slow).

Buy an ATA drive. There isn't any reason to spend the money on a new SCSI drive and then castrate it by putting it on that old SCSI card. Any available 7200RPM ATA drive will be dramatically faster than that Viking.

Your SCSI card is too old. The 2940U2W had LVD capabilities, but not the original 2940UW. Putting any of the newer HDDs with it would be crippling its performance. However, if you really want to, most all the Fujitsu 10K and 15K drives are quiet, along with Seagate 10K.6 or 15K.3 and Atlas IV series.

Dang, I've held on to that puppy since my plextor 8/20 was the top dog in CD-Rs. :) I only hung onto the viking for reliability reasons. I likely will end up buying another ATA drive or partitioning a section of my current JBOD setup to boot.
