I've been looking for a truly quiet PSU. One obvious way to get good airflow with quiet fans is to use larger fans. Behold:
120mm fan PSU goodness
Its inexpensive, quality (Tomshardware.com recommended a Fortron PSU in its 21 PSU roundup article, here), and has a none-too-shabby 3.3V + 5V combined 200W rating, surpassing several Enermax PSUs. It should either run quiet in stock form, or for tweakers, can likely have a Panaflo, Papst, etc quiet 120mm fan installed without much trouble.
Opinions?
I'm not sure how serious this "the top of the power supply gets warm" problem the newegg reviewer cites is, but I'm guessing... not at all. How can a 120mm fan blow into a PSU enclosure with 1 exhaust spot (the back) without the air escaping from that exhaust? I understand that perhaps some warmer air will gather at the top, but do I really care? Probably not.. and theres good reason to believe this design is sound. After all, Fortron has to manufacture it specially, and I don't see them breaking out a new construction line just to manufacture PSUs which overheat by their nature.
Anyhow, its cheap at $32 shipped. What quiet PSUs do you guys run? I'm also considering the Antec TruePower series.
CORRECTION: It is a 60CFM @ 39dB fan, you will probably want to either voltage-mod this fan or replace it, unless you decide that it will be your only exhaust fan. 39dB isnt terrible, but not quiet either. On the upside, remember that 120mm fan noise will also be lower pitch, and therefore less annoying than an 80mm.
