my hsf sounds like a vaccuum. i look everywhere but there's not too many socket423 hsf's around. which one's a nice quiet one to use? (not overclocking at all) and where the heck can i find it? better yet, anyone got one for sale? thanks.

Socket 423 was phased out a loooong time ago. Everything is for Socket 478 now. I don't think you'll have much luck but I wish you well.

You might be better off just replacing the fan on your current heatsink with a quieter one. I don't know how large your HSF is, but I'm sure you can find something like a Panaflo L1A in the right size. They're very quiet, and move air efficiently. If that isn't enough, you can find temperature sensing fans, or just a faster fan, like a Panaflo M1A (the medium speed versions).

i have an indigo orb, which states a dba of 30, but for some reason its really loud. maybe the person i bought it from modified the fan.

Oh, an Orb. Hmm. Well, I guess you can't just swap out the fan, then. An alternative would be something like the Zalman Fan Mate, which would allow you to turn down the voltage. Just be careful your fan will start up if you decide to set the volts very low (5V or something).

You could also try a simple 7-volt mod for the fan. You'd have to connect it to an adapter and run it through a molex, of course. 7-volt modding works very, very well and it's really easy to do.

Obviously, with either of these methods, your CPU temperature is going to go up a bit. Just a couple things to keep in mind if you can't find a new cooler.
