Quiet north bridge cooler

I made the mistake of skimping on my mobo and bought an Epox board. Don't get me wrong it got good reviews and has alot of great options but the biggest problem is the north bridge chip's fan. I ordered a small artec fan and put it on there but it's just as loud. It's a high pitched noise that drives me crazy. Every single fan in my case but that one is whisper quiet. If I could jut find something to replace that fan my mental health would dramatically improve. The only problem is that my video card sticks right out over the north bridge chip and limits my options. It's only got about a half inch worth of height to squeeze something ontop of it. Is there any sort of passive device that might have a heat tube or something coming off of it? And or does someone know of a small VERY VERY quite fan that would fit on there?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try one of those Evercool VGA/NB fans (the ones with small 40-45mm fans). Zalman passive won't fit since it's really tall and I won't recommend chopping the fins.

I'm willing to pay for the JingTing if necessary, but the Titan looks ok and at $11.99 it's a bit more attractive to the ol pocket book. Has anyone had experiences with these?

The JingTing is really only necissary for specific applications. I, as an owner of one myself, can tell you that the thermal performance is great, but not extremely superior to others. However, I am extremely happy with mine, as I own a DFI NF4 board and have a 7800 with an NV silencer installed. The JingTing was literally the only way to get any kind of real cooling for the chipset. If you're interested, I wrote up a short review on it here, which I will be adding to in a day or two with a retrospective.

Yeah, it looks like it would solve my problem nicely, but 40 bucks is pretty steap for a NB cooler. I've got a 6800Gt w/a NV silencer as well that sits right over the chip. So I'm in a bit of a tight spot myself. I am willing to pay for it I just need to make sure it's worth the money as apposed to the 12 dollar Titan.

The Jing Ting is great as far as getting it out of the way for SLI or new large video cards and in my expeireinces, the thing it excels at is the temps. really do not vary much with the Jing Ting.......even under heavy use load the temps. barely budge.....

Did you have a bad experience with chopping the fins?

I have one of these for a different motherbaord, and its works mighty fine. I just had to bend the fins so that the gpu could fit and I havent noticed any high temps from the Chipset

Exactly, but thanks none the less for trying.

Anyone have any experience with this product that RallyMaster suggested.

it's a solid copper standard replacement so it's going to cool a lot better than your stock one but, it's not going to be passive, I just last week picked up my jingting off ebay.

I just found a review here. It is saying that the "Jing Ting Force is MUCH quieter". I also found one saying that it isn't "dead silent" over here. I am VERY much so worried about the noise more than the overclocking possibilites of it being much cooler. I've got a NV cooler on my 6800GT and a Zalman CNPS9500 on my CPU all stuffed into an Antec P-180. The box is damn near silent when the northbridge cooler isn't connected.

I'm willing to wait for one to get back in stock if someone can assure me that it will be UBER quiet.

Thanks again to everyone for their help.

Ok, so you don't have any overheating issues running your JingTing passive? That's the best news I've heard in a while. Now if only I could find the damned thing in stock.

Plenty of people on the SPCR forums have cut down some of the fins without any decrease in the amount of cooling performance,

Be that as it may, it's neither the solution I'm looking for, nor is it applicable in my situation because I have upgraded my GPU cooler as well. I would have to cut off 80-90% of the fins and that would be grossly ineffective

Ok, I still can't find the JingTing in stock anywhere. Anyone else got any possible solutions? This noise thing is about to drive me off my rocker.

replace the stock grease and, if your stock cooler is big enough and there is airflow, just unplug the fan! Those tiny fans don't move much air anyway so the temp difference won't be huge.

If you have a old Heatsink laying around, you can easly mod your self up one, I did that with a old a64 heatsink its about 5C cooler and its passive s all is good.
