i have the stock for now but i am looking to upgrade. i was thinking of either a thermalright xp-90 with a 120 mm adapter for a quiter fan, or a zalman 7700-cu, or 7700 alcu. what do you think. i am looking for quiet but good proformance. 120 mm fans are great.

The zalman 7000's, which use 90mm fans, are quieter than the 7700's, which use 120mm fans. The 7000 is the best if what you really care about is noise, the xp-90 and xp-120 are designed more for being good coolers than being super quiet.

thnk you cheesepoofs. it is supprising though that you say the 7000s are quieter than the 7700s though because of the fans. i will look into that.

I'm using the 7000 on my Epox 9NDA3+\Winchester 3000+ @ 2.5 (and a P4 3.2 @ 3.6) and it's been fine.

from reviews i've heard, the 7700 is VERY quiet, especially since the low fan setting should still get you more cooling power, because the fan is so much bigger, but i'm not sure. I also have a VNF4/Ultra and i think i'm gonna get a 7700-AlCu. I'm sure the 7000 is fine, too.

The difference is the aluminum/copper one cools slightly worse than the all copper one, but it ways less and costs about $10 less.
