Quiet hard drive at 60-80GB - help me find one! :)

Hi,

I am in the process of dumping a bad 75GB Deskstar and want to replace it with something around the same size if possible. However, I need something quiet.

If anyone has a 20.5GB Deskstar 34GXP, you'll know the level I'm talking about.

The rig it's planned for is going to be sitting a couple feet away from my bed, so....

TIA for suggestions.

By the way, is there anyplace where one can find normal operating decibel levels for hard drives? The spec sheets I saw for IBM's drives at the IBM site don't include this info.

I know this isn't any help to you at all, but, I have a 20GB Maxtor drive... 7200rpm, ATA100.. I've never heard it make a noise. I'm not sure if this holds true for their larger capacity drives... may be worth a look tho. best drive I've ever owned.

Seagate Barracude IV is supposed to be very quiet.
With the its new fluid bearing technology.

I believe it also insulated the bottom HD to lower the noise level.

I'd only go with a Seagate for high-end performance.

Maxtor is the drive you want for pretty much everything else (which means 99% of the time). 🙂

If quietness is needed, consider the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus60, or Fireball Plus AS w/ fluid bearings. Mind you that some of those Maxtor boxes will have Fireball Plus AS inside since the Quantum acquisition.

So... what's so high-end about those 'Cudas? From what I know, they have strong transfer rates, but very weak access times.
