Quiet fan...........?

Which fan are the quietest I can get for the CPU & Case.

My boss is complaining that her new Athlon is too noisy. I?m tempted to get her a water cool unit & a quiet case fan, but I prefer nice traditional air cool one if they are available.

The low speed panaflos are excellent choices for quiet cpu cooling. You may get a better response in cases and cooling though.

Thank you for trying, but the Panaflo in low speed mode is 32 dBA. While the Zalman Tech are 20 dBA is low speed mode. I'm not looking for high performance for OCing, but for low noise level, and the Zalman Tech seemed to fit the bill.

THere is a panaflo that does 21DB.

There is a pabst that does 18DB.

Both are low flow, around 20CFMS. You can find them around.

The more case fans you have the louder your computer can get correct even if all the fans have low dBa sense it can add up or no ?

Isn't dB measure in exponentially greater?

30 dB is 10X louder than 20 dB.
40 dB is 100X louder than 20 dB.
50 dB is 1000X louder than 20 dB.

Therefor 20dB + 20dB = 21dB

It isn?t so bad to have 2 or 3 fans that produce 20 dB, comparing to have one fan that produce 30 dB.

I would agree here with you (from experience at least); I'm using 4 low-rpm fans currently (2 front, 2 rear), and it seems to be lower noise then if I put only 2, but medium speed fans in the back... I bought today a neon fan (medium noise) and put it into the position of my quiet one; the box is pretty loud now, so neon fan will have to go away...

What you can do, and what I did, was get a really well ventilated case (mine has two fan mounts on the front, two on the back), fill in all the holders, and undervolt all the fans to 5V. If you start with fans that were quiet in the first place, at 5V it's basically silent. I cannot hear any of the case fans in my system. I had an XP 2K+ in it for a while and the temps were perfectly inline with what others had for the mobo.

my understanding of dBa is it goes up by noise energy, actually there's a link posted in these forums somewhere recently, which i vaguely recall saying something like 20+20dba = either 21 or 23dBa; but its noise energy which isnt necessarily equal to the effect on your ears, er, as such. Er hence two 20dba fans dont make twice the noise of one, because to an extent they sort of cancel each other out, er or something.

Anyway Panaflo's seem to get good marks, a lot of people like Papst too but also heard not so great things from them; some Enermax fans are also meant to be good, come with rheostats to turn them down aswell. Mind most fan makers come out with many models of fan, an example of a few manuf's - http://www.gizzo.8m.com/fans/ . dBa isnt the one thing to consider though, some vibrate more than others which can mean more noise for cpu fans expecially if they vibrate the heatsink pins (probs not much good for your cpu either).

I recently got a couple of Evercool low noise fans, they dont push much air but are really quiet, and were pretty cheap.

You need to get a quality fan like a sleeve-bearing Papst or Panaflo in the largest size you can fit. Then you can provide as little power as you want if they do not offer the exact airflow/noise level desired. Getting a crap quality fan that has just been fixed at a lower power is not the way to get the quietest or longest lasting fan.

What would you guys recommend for a quiet 60mm fan used to cool an Athlon XP 1700+? I have a CoolerMaster HHC-001 heatsink and the fan it came with is comparable to the Delta screamer🙁

The ThermalTake Volcano 6 cu fan is a bit of a aged one, but is only 31 dB and a excellent cooler, I used it to replace a old 7000RPM all aluminum one, got much more quiet, and it cools my CPU 20 degrees (F) lower! so anyways I run my CPU at about 100-110 degrees F idel and no more than 120 at extended time full load. Of course this is with artic silver 3 and not the heatpad it comes with. This heatsink can be found for abouts 8 bux or so at pricewatch so not too heavy on the wallet.

For quiet, Zalman is the way to go. Or.. buy a Dell.. They are nearly silent, due to the large 120MM fan they use..
