My new i5 760 is very quiet. My old Athlon 64 3200+ probably(?) outputs a lot more heat and requires more CFM. After all these years, it's time to spend a few bucks to reduce the sound. But do have to be aware of the potentially greater heat concerns.
What I Have:
Click to see a bigger picture. Lower left by the HDDs is the intake.

There is so much noise coming from this box it's tough to tell where it's coming from. But I think the globes and the case fans are a big part of the problem, so I'm going to start (hopefully end) there.
What I Want:
Scythes seem to be popular for quiet, effective fans according to this recent thread
Case FansI'm thinking a couple Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mms. ~30CFM and very quiet.
CPU Fan The question is how much CFM/Noise for the CPU?
This Silent PC Review Thermalright XP-120 Round Up tested fans that were around what was 60+CFM, so it's likely the SFF21Ds aren't good enough.
The SFF21E has 49CFM and is likely significantly quieter than my current CPU fan. It's lower CFM but hopefully good enough.
Airflow
Currently I have Front Case Fan Intake, Rear Case Fan Exhaust, and the CPU is on blow, not suck. The Silent PC Review Thermalright XP-120 Round Up implies that suck (down) is better so I'll leave the CPU at that. But I'm thinking maybe it's more efficient for the rear exhaust to pull in as well? The top of the case is so open that I might be fine with out a direct exhaust. I currently have an exhaust cover on the back of the case that I might want to pull of too (I can post a picture to explain if needed). Maybe I should just test this stuff empirically when I get the new fans but input would be welcome.
What I Have:
- Athlon XP 3200
- HS Thermalright XP 120
- A Globe Fan on the CPU (No, not really the right Globe, I don't believe - I bought the wrong, loud kind, as documented in this thread
- Lian Li PC V10000 Case
- 2xStock Case Fans, 1 in, 1 Out (120mm)
- Radeon X800XL w/ After market Zalman Fan VF700 (already worked on quieting that many years ago)
- Seasonic Super Tornado 300 W PSU
- 2 HDD (80GB, 750GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM)
