Looking for a new DVD drive for a system I am building. I want something that is decently quiet when playing DVD so that it won't be too frustrating in the living room. I'm not really worried about the noise when it is acting as a data drive. Was thinking about a pioneer 10x (heard they are quieter than the 16x), a creative 12x or one of the generic Afreey, etc running around.

Any thoughts.

Pioneer drives aren't quiet. I have a tray version of the 16X, and it's pretty loud, and the slot ones are even worse. Toshiba drives are much quieter, and perform just as well.

There have been alot of posts on this subject so do a search. I would suugest that you look at the Toshiba drives. They are much quieter that the pioneers and read data better. I have the Tosh 1502 and love it.;)

I have a Pioneer 16x drive and it's very quiet while reading DVDs. CD-ROMs are another story, however. Fairly good audio extraction rate too. For $85 it's a good drive. Anyhow, I'm happy with mine.
