Quiet DVD Drives?

Hey. I'm on this 5 year old Dell computer which I bought back in fall of '99. Now, whenever I play games and the CD in the drive is spinning, it revs up so loudly I almost want to rip it right out of the case. My question is, if I bought a faster speed DVD/CD-ROM, say 16x DVD-ROM and 48x CD-ROM, would it run quieter? I need a quiet drive for my new computer, because this is really annoying. Thanks.

All depends on the drive, there's not going to be any "quiet" drive, esp. when you start maxing out the capable speeds.

Noise levels vary widely. Chances are that a good quality drive like an HLG would generally be much quieter at the same speeds but if a CD is going to be read at 40x instead of 16x or such then it might equal out depending on how craptastic the existing one is. The best solution is to not use CD's for gameplay (do full installs and use no-cd cracks where possible). In lieu of that do as memorie2002 sez with DriveSpeed or other such free utilties from the manufacturer.

Makes me miss those 7 laser 72x Kenwood CD-ROM drives... those where WHISPER quiet...

I have a sony dvd burner and a samsung dvd-rom/cdrw combo drive and both make loud noises when spinning at max but both came with sw that lets you control the speed so you dont go nuts.

Use something like dvd idle or nero drivespeed to limit the drives speeds at 32x or 12x. makes a noticeable difference.

Theres also an option in a program called AnyDVD that lets you set the drive as "quiet and slow" or "fast and noisy".
