Quiet DVD drive

Ok...I have a very quiet machine (Antec Sonata, Zalaman 7000, etc.) and everything is whisper quiet until I put something in my DVD drive (2yr old Pioneer drive). The thing winds up like a jet engine (at least relative to the rest of the components). I never noticed in my old machine because it was so loud...but I definitely notice now. I have been wanting to replace this thing anyway (it is beige instead of black), but this finally gives me a real reason to do so.

Please let me know what in your experience was the quietest DVD drive.

Thanks.

I just bought Asus DVD Rom 16X drive and it's whisper quiet. If the whiniing gets to you a $31.00 DVD drive will keep it out of you.

For abouit twice that amount you could get a DVD burner at Newegg.

Pioneer A07XLB is very quite, much quiter than my previous NEC-2500A and Pioneer A04.
Note that A07XLB and A07 are different drives.

Pioneer drives have a utility available that allows you to reduce the drive speed and run in "quiet mode". It's perfect for DVD movies.

is this a special driver that you have to download or just one that comes with Win XP?

i'm currently using the slot loading pioneer drive, and it's whisper quiet- you might want to look into purchasing some cheap rubber standoffs/insulation for the dvd drive- they do a fantastic job of dampening vibration and quieting my entire system.

Thanks everyone for the input. I went ahead and ordered an Asus 16x as I my Asus writer is very quiet during operation, so I hope this one will be too.

In the mean time, I am going to see if my old Pioneer drive is compatible with the speed managing software...pretty cool stuff.
