Is this my best solution? Ideally I want something that makes direct contact with GPU and RAM, is reasonably quiet, and doesn't block another slot.

I tried the ATI Silencer with the X800XL I used to have. I didn't like how it fit, it and it seemed like the exhaust of the fan/shroud was too far back from the opening in the back of the case for the DHES to make any difference. If I'd have kept the card (I miss it too) I'd have tried the Zalman cooler.

If I choose not to block a slot, are there any quiet options at all?

What if I go for one that does block a slot. What which of these is my best option then? If I did go for one that blocks slot, I'd want to overclock.

No single slot quiet coolers that I know of. Quiet coolers depend on bigger heatsinks with more heat dissipation and larger slower rotating fans.

The X800XL ain't much of an overclocker. I have one with the Silencer 5 rev.2 installed and it keeps it cool even with the fan manually undervolted using a Zalman Fanmate. But no matter what, I can't get my card over 425MHz core without it locking up the system and temps only rise up to 60C according to ATITool.

I have an X800XL with a Arctic Silencer 5 Rev. 2

I really like the noise reduction, it made a HUGE difference compared to the stock fan. Also my temps dropped 20c full load!! and the idle temp went from 45c to 37c!

But the extra slot being used is something to think about. Mine doesn't matter casue the slots next to the X800XL are just PCIEx1 so they can't be used anyway :)

I haven't personally used the Zalman, but the fact that it doesn't make contact with the memory worries me.

P.S. My X800XL id OC'd to 450/575 with my Arctic Silencer (not amazing or anything, but better than most)

You want quiet cooling? Look no further than Gigabyte's X800 XL which has totally passive cooling (PCIe only)
