[edit]

First off Thank You to everyone that has helped me!

For the 1700+ system[@1.6ghz]:

-Thermalright Si-97
-Panaflo 92mm L1B - FBA09A12L1BX
Dimensions 92mm x 92mm x 25mm
Speed 2100 RPM
Air Flow 42.7 CFM
Noise Level 27.0 dBA

For the 2.8 ghz P4 System [abit IC7 mobo]:

-Thermalright XP-90
-Panaflo M1 92x92x25mm case fan
DIMENSION: 92 x 92 x 25mm
SPEED: 2450 RPM
AIR FLOW: 48.0 CFM
NOISE: 30.0 dBA

AS ceramique for both.

I am hoping that the P4 is sufficiently cool so that I can comfortably bring it to 3.2 ghz w. stock voltage.
Assuming this is quiet enough I might buy a XP-90 for my main P4 setup but substitute the H1B for the M1 which is 6 db louder and ~10 cfm more.

Metal cutting question

I would prefer to put the XP-120 in my main system. But it's incompatible with my IC7-max3...
Any idea on how I can do this?

Hello all,

First off both of these systems will be housed in Antec Sonatas.

Secondly for the Intel system I do not believe the motherboard supports the super-quiet Zalman CNPS.
The mobo for the intel is a ABit Ic7 and i have a Abit IC7-Max3 and the Zalman 7700 ALCU did not fit on that motherboard so i can only assume the trend would continue [please advise if i am wrong!].

So basically I need quiet HSF combos [price is not a concern] as i've learned from current experience..you want amazing cooling you pay for it in sound (my smart fan 2 @ full bore = jet engine).

The athlon 1700+ system is on an Asus A78nx motherboard.

Both systems will be moderately overclocked (not a big concern as both o/c @ default voltage).

Thanks!!!!

Thermalright XP-90's should work on both systems. Get some quiet 92mm fans and you'll be all set.
If you don't like those, then look at other Thermalright coolers. I've not read any reviews on the Arctic Cooling Freezer 4's but you might want to look into those as well.

Thermalright XP-90 with a Panaflow M or L1A is your best bet for guaranteed capability.

Question....

Why wouldn't i go with a XP-120 versus a XP-90 for the intel system?

thanks!

whoa, careful with the thermalright XP90 and AXP 1700+

You really want the SI-97 as the XP90 is NOT compatible with socket A last i checked.

XP90 for Intel
SI97 for AXP

For both, use either a nexus 92mm, panaflo BXL1A 92mm. The panaflo can be found at jab-tech

Whoops your right.

I would take the 90 over the 120 due to price and the negligible difference in performance.

Thanks for the great advice guys!

Now I must mention. Price is no object. When I bought my SLK-947U + smartfan 2 a year ago it cost me upwards of 55-60 dollars and while it keeps my 24/7 100% usage system @ ~40C it is louder than hell!

My question is the size fan I can retrofit on a XP-90 versus a XP-120. I want to push a lot of air at less noise. Which a 120 MM fan can do better than a 90 mm fan(assuming that's what the XP-90 accepts]

Lastly anyone know if these 2 HSF combos fit on Abit IC7's and IC7-max3's?

Thanks!

I will unconditionally say that the XP-90 will fit your intel board. The Si97 will fit your AMD board.

FOr the AMD board, if the CPU socket is near the top, you need slightly more than 1cm clearance between the board and psu.

My roommate bought SI-97 and Panaflo L1A BX 92mm from jab-tech.com and got it for a decent price. I believe the SI-97 is 35$ and the Panaflo is 8$.

Problem with XP120 is that I believe it is not compatible with the IC7max3. I could be wrong. in either case, it is a tight squeeze on most boards. I think the XP90 with panaflo L1A BX 92mm will be sufficient for your needs. The panaflo starts getting quiet below 9V and near silent below 7V.

There is just a slight problem....or perhaps maybe 2...

I removed the black plastic mounting bracket that the stock intel hsf's latch into when I had to attach my 947-U. It appears that this is the only way that the XP-90 attaches to the motherboard. Is there any way to attach it to the mobo much like a 947U [i.e. with 4 bolts?]

Or is there some work around?

Also the reason I was worried about the XP-90 and XP-120 [especially] not fitting on my motherboard is due to the very tall chipset hsf; seen here:

Please click image for larger view [also note the black retention brackets which I do not have on mine]

Thanks all!
