My computer is noisy with fans.

What is the cheapest way to deaden the noise?, I am considering putting the styrofoam lining but any other "cost-effective" ideas?

would appreciate it very much.

All the sound deadening material in the world won't quiet those fans at the front and back of the case. I'd suggest investing in some low-noise fans for those positions and, if you really want to get extreme, go for the sound deadening material.

This sheething material looks kinda hard, like impact hard. A great sound absorber always follows in the way of being soft so it can soak the sound, something hard will bounce it around some, but of course this stuff has mass to it, and its probably softer then steal so ya you would hear a difference use this sheething stuff. A better cheap sound absorber would be carpet foam $2 for 6x2 sheet...... or try foam padding, that looks similar to high grade acustic foam, its got odd curves in so that the sound that does bouce off of it it does irreguraly (back on itself), goes for $6.

Ah but you see sheeting material will take for vibration's out and make the sound softer. You can't stop the sound of fans with any kind of material but you can make it softer.

The stuff I got wasn't hard, though it is messy and makes full of little green residue or something. It doesn't seem to be going into my case though.

I'm considering moving my computer into the crawlspace in my house, which is directly below where I now have my computer. I'd place the computer facing up toward the floor, and use a hatch in my floor to access the floppy and DVD drive. This should minimize sound and maximize cooling. What do you think?

I put that stuff all around my hard drive leaving about an inche top and bottom, and blocked the front of my drive cage with a peace and I touched my harddrive after like 2 days my pc has been on it's it's not hot at all, and the way it's place it can't get a decent airflow, wounder if that stuff absorbes heat to!

"My computer is noisy with fans."

You need better P/S with quit fans,or need to replace that existing fan.

Thanks,

HS

My suggestion would be to replace every fan in your system with Panaflo L1A's, you might take a hit in airflow (assuming you are using Sunon's or something comparable)but the reduction in noise will be astounding. You can buy L1A's here, there are a few catches though in that you have to buy at least 10, not really a problem since they are $3 a piece, and they are a phone order only establishment. I ordered 10 from them a while ago and don't regret it at all. Oh and the other catch is that they come without connectors, so you either have to attach connectors yourself or get a fanbus.

The cheapest way to quiet down a case is to do w/100mph tape also known as Duck Tape. Just few cris-cross on all the panels (top, bottom, sides and where ever possible) and two layers between any metal/screw contact as poor man's grommet. The vibrations from the case usually amplifies the noise, so this'll cut down few decibels for sure and it isn't all that hard to do. Fan noises on the other, either you cut down on number of fans, spend big $$ on quieter fans or go water cooling.
