Quiet Athlon 64 Socket 754 - what to get?

Hi,

I am replacing my Athlon XP Socket A combo with an Althon 64 3400+, probably the Socket 754 one.

With the XP I was dissatisfied with the fan provided by AMD, it was much louder than my Intel-provided fan and its geometry seems to attract extra dust on the wings.

So I am considering getting the bare Athlon 64 and get a heatsink and fan elsewhere. But where? Any suggestions for quiet solutions?

I don't overclock, BTW, so basic thermal performance will be just fine.

Suggestions for a quiet power supply would also be welcome.

Thanks
Martin

I use a Zalman 7000AlCu on my 3000+. Combined with a Antec single fan PSU, it's a very quiet rig.

First off, DON'T get a Thermaltake cooler. They're not really bad but they're far from the top.
If you don't want to spend a lot get the Zalman 7000A AlCu for $30. It doesn't get much better than this and what is better costs $50+. If you want the absolute best for silent PCs get the Thermalright XP-120 and a good fan. Take a look at silentpcreview.com's recommended section for a fan.
For a power supply, you should definitely get a Seasonic Super Torando. This PSU is also on top of silentpcreview's recommended list and I would buy it again any day.

I'll second the seasonic tornado. I picked up a different one with a 120mm fan and the thing was loud enough to drown out the stock amd64 HS/fan. The seasonic ones are pretty much silent, really efficient, and have a lot of power (amps) on the 12v rail too.
