hehehe. That's funny. :)

I'd agree with sellmen that for an 80mm, the Panaflo Ultra would be your best bet. If you're willing to go up a size though, Panaflo also makes the 92mm FBA09A12M which outputs 48 CFM at 30 dBA.

Will it work to cool down a AMD Athlon XP2100+?

It can't be quiet and supply less than 45 cfm of air.

If you have a big, quality heatsink on your processor, you can cool it with a low speed fan. I'm running my Barton 2500 @ 2100mhz, and cooling it with a SK-7 w/ a Panaflo L1A (21 db, 24CFM). Load temps are about 50 degrees C.

A fan @ 36db really isn't very quiet, in my opinion.

Right now I have a Thermaltake smart fan 1 and cut out the thermistor and short circuited the wires, giving it max speed (4500 RPM). My CPU gets to about 55C-56C on hot days w/o any overclocking. But the noise (supposedly 36dBA) is on the threshold of being unbearable for long periods of time.

What motherboard are you using, and is that an on-die reading? Also, what thermal interface material are you using?

Mobo: Abit KX7-333

thermal reading is a "probe" thing that contacts the bottom of the CPU. The XP2100+ isn't ceramic but rather a brownish semi-conductor material.

I am using Arctic Silver II as the thermal grease.

That's not good...those Pallys ran hot . I'd probably get something like this:

Panaflo High Speed Fan

2950 RPM, 32dB, 40CFM

It'll be significantly quieter then your old fan, and provide decent cooling. I had a 2000+ Palomino for awhile; I couldn't get load temps much under the mid 50's without putting a loud 55CFM fan on my AX-7. Eventually the noise drove me crazy, so I put a 40CFM fan on instead. Though load temps went back into the 50's, I had absolutely no stability problems with this setup.

As long as your processor is stable, I wouldn't worry too much about temps. Abit boards do tend to read a bit higher than other boards.

interesting

so w/ this fan and the AX-7, you had no real problems w/ stability? what are some of the highest load temps you've seen?

Edit: I missed the second page of posts - oops.

Less airflow means higher temps (obviously), but I've heard that Abit boards read temperatures high. As long as your system is stable, you should be fine. The increased heat will reduce the lifespan of your cpu, but are you really planning on having the same cpu 5 years from now?
