I am a quiet PC fanatic - so I need to know:

What are the quietest 60mm fans? (I will be cranking the RPMs down with a fan controller)

I just assembled my HTPC - right now the only fans are an 80mm intake at 7v, my Zalman 7000(b?) at 1300rpms, and a 80mm in the PSU.

I have 2 open spaces for 60mm fans in the back, but they need to be ultra quiet and undervoltable (is that a word?) - oh yeah and they need to have 3 pin plugs and not just molex.

Any input would be great!

Wow, the stats on this fan are crazy! Do you think 12cfm is enough?

"The high quality Panaflo FBA06T12l features a super low profile (15mm), hydro wave bearing, aerodynamic blade and venturi, a locked rotor protection an auto start function and lower circuit noise."

Volts: 12
Operating Voltage: 7 - 13.8
Rated Current: 88ma
Rated Input: 1.06 Watts
Nominal Speed: 3200rpm
Maximum Airflow: 12cfm
Noise: 24dba

I wouldn't want only 12CFM for case fans - I have the 70mm version of the Evercool 60x25 on this page: http://www.buyextras.com/60fanin25th.html and it undervolts nicely. Available here too: http://www.nexfan.com/ev60hbabefan.html

Another option is to use a 60 to 80mm fan adapter on the outside of the case - more air, less noise. Have to see the back of your case to know for sure if it would work - got a pic? I've had to make a spacer from the frame of a cheap 60mm fan that came with it to mount to an Athenatech A100 series compact desktop case with inset back panels. Of cours, you should cut out any restrictive grille that might be there.

Those specs make me laugh... there is no way in hell that ANY fan which is 3200RPM will make anything close to 24 dBA of noise - more like 40. For any 60mm fan to move a useful amount of air, it's going to have to make lots of noise... they're just too small to get that much CFM out of.

Sure it can - they just left out the fact that the sound level meter was in the adjoining room! ;)

I might have to give the Evercool a try - The stats look much more realistic then the panaflo .

The back of my case (Thermaltake Tenor) has really restrictive grills - I plan on cutting them out eventually, but it will have to wait for now as I don't really have the time or patience to rip everything out of my case and take it somewhere to have it done. The back appears to be much thicker material then other cases - I'm not sure if a regular dremel will make it through very easy.

Damn that's stupid! only 60mm fans w/ over 30% restriction... Only 1mm SECC - could use a nibbler on that to cut out cleanly. Give your wrists a nice workout - switch off hands to build evenly. ;) Dremel much messier - the diamond wheel bit would work OK and be less messy than the stone cutting disks.
