quicky: may I use two directional antennas with one WRT54G?

Didn't get google to answer this:

I a trying to convince my Uni union to install WiFi units pointing from the dorms toward the building around. That way students how live near the dorms can get free internet connection.
I want to use WDS to distribute the signal. Hope that I can use one WRT54G in each house, when one directional antenna gets the signal while the other sends it to the other household.

May I do that, or must I have two units in each house?

Thanks,
Niv

The regular WRT isn't just going to "repeat" the signal. At least as far as I know. You need to look into Linksys high gain antenna's, signal booster, signal repeaters, and there is also hacked firmware to boost output up to 80mw (not safe for hardware IMO) from like 20mw stock. I think around 40mw makes a great boost

Modified firmware for the WRT54Gs will allow them to repeat signals to each other. However using directional antennas don't really work for a bunch of scattered laptops.

I am afraid it is not so simple and certainly Not Inexpensive.

1. I do not think you can equipped the thingie with two Directional Antennae making transmit receive decision.

2. Repeaters cut the bandwidth into half and most can not be daisy chained.

Multiple Bridging might work, but would need a lot of hardware.

Very nice! I wondered if that modded firmware did that

If your AP has two antennas, then it's working in "diversity mode" ... meaning that only one antenna is active at a time (it helps to overcome multipath interference).

Putting a splitter in the line is also a bad idea: it cuts the signal level down by more than half (plus cable & connector losses).

That coupled with the store & forward loss of bandwidth means you end up spending a ot of money on a system that sucks ... (i.e., "SUX DELUX").

WDS doesn't play into the signal repeating at all. It's more of an authentication thing.
