Quicktime Crashes

As far as I know, nothing new has been added to my computer except for a few games (Hellgate London, Crysis, Bioshock, and SoF2 DH). I scan for viruses/spyware/adware regularly as well as defrag once every two weeks.

Well, about three months ago, I was trying to view some movies online for my Psychology class which were all in .mov (Quicktime) format. None of the movies would play. I thought it was just the website or my college doing some maintenance. I knew that Quicktime would play the movies because I had watched a MGS3 Speedrun about two weeks prior - all the videos were on Quicktime.

Anyways, for some reason, when I click on the Quicktime icon to launch it, it gives me an error report without ever loading. I have tried downloading a different version (old and new) just to see if that would fix it. So far, nothing I have tried will remedy this problem. I do, however, need a reformat and have freed up a weekend in my schedule to do just that here in about four months. It does seem a bit extreme to reformat my PC earlier than required just for Quicktime.

The only reason I am posting this is because my English 211 class this semester has a variety of videos and clips for and about authors that I will need to watch. I could just use the computer lab at the college to view these, but it is much more convenient if I could watch them at home since it is an hour and a half drive to the college.

If anyone has a possible solution, please let me know or direct me to a place that might know.

for the last 2-3 years I've been usine Quicklime Alternative as a replacement for the full (and bleated) version released by Apple. Here is my suggestion:

1. Uninstall the QuickTime version you got.
2. search for QuickTime Alternative on the web. it's free and can be easily found on download websites like Softpedia corn.
3. after installing the alternative, use media Player Classic (also free and usually bundled with QuickTime Alternative) to play your videos.

if MPC is not bundled with your download go to SourceForge.net and download MPC from there. You can also get the Home Cinema version of Media Player Classic.

I have found Q/T to be an abomination - mainly because it tries to take over everything.

I then tried QT Alternative - and didn't care for it either.

I settled on SMPlayer. It handles .MOV files nicely. )That's my only reason for using Q/T or any derivatives hereof.)

Well, my VLC Player acts as a replacement for the .mov files, but Firefox crashes when a quicktime movie tries to stream. I shall try those suggestions.

Thanks.

Oh yeah, this is your course of action, I wholeheartedly agree with nordloewelabs here. The alternative works great for streaming too.
