i am fixing up a sony vaio 233mhz 32mb ram with a 4gb harddrive.

it has win95 right now. which is probably the best choice? is win98 much better than 95? and is NT hard enough for non-computer people so that i should use 98?

thanks.

Windows 98 4 sure. Its much better than 95, in terms of stability and software support. But whatever you do don't use NT.

98se if you can get it.

Bingo 😀

Mandrake, Red Hat, and Debian rulez..

All else fails windows 98 is o.k.

I would use Linux or NetBSD as first choices (depending on which CD happened to be closer at the time; I like both OSes). If Windows programs must be run, I would use NT4. For somebody who doesn't have as much patience as I do, and who doesn't need the best stability and security, Windows 98 would probably be better.

I would recomend staying with 95 or going up to 98. but you might want to boost your ram a bit (not very expensive at 66mhz).

98 is definately a better OS, but it is going to take a bit more resourses to run it smoothly.

but then again, the benifit of having the OS already set up with all your drivers loaded is pretty sweet too. If your not willing to reformat and loan new drivers I would stay with 95.

hope that helps.

Are you going to use it for gaming? If not, go with NT 4 Workstation. It's more stable than 95 or 98. If you can find a copy of IE 4, you can also install the browser GUI enhancements to the OS, so it will have the Windows 98 look and feel.

thanks for the replies!

i'll probably go up to win98. i wont use linux because my friend will be all confused how easy everything is =p. i think i'll just stick with what they are used to.

i forgot to mention that i was going to add some ram, like 128mb. but surprisingly, at crucial.com, PC133 is cheaper than 66mhz sdram! i was thinking of just buying the pc133 and sticking that in. anyone know if itll work fine?

I had NT4 on my P233/144 MB/3G laptop before and it was solid (except USB didn't work). However 32 MB RAM is far from enough for NT4.
