So my dad just realized that his passport expired a few months ago... one week before his trip to Europe. What is the quickest way to go about renewing it, and what should he bring? Is the post office the best option?

Ugh.

oof that's not good ... passport usually takes a while

A few years ago (2001), my Mom and I were going to India to visit family ... we were supposed to leave Monday morning, but the flight got pre-delayed to Monday night ... anyways, she was checking her passport on the Friday before and she found out that her Visa had expired ...

So on Monday morning, she flew from L.A. to S.F., went to the Indian Consulate to get the new Visa, flew back to L.A., and we went to India

kind of off topic ... yeah...

I renewed mine the standard way and it came back pretty fast. Less than two weeks I think. Though that won't help you...

The Post office is gonna take 2 weeks. I think there are still places in large cities that handle it right then and there. I know there were many years ago.

yeah you can pay a lot for expedited service. most countries require you to have a few months remaining before your passport expires to even enter the country.

Yeah, expedited service from the US Travel website says it takes 2 weeks if expedited.

This site seems to indicate it can do it quicker, but I don't know how much to trust these online sites.

It's possible to do it quicker. I was able to get my passport renewed in one day.

I don't know if your dad fits, but if he does, hopefully there's a center near you. What I also had to do was show my travel itenirary, showing my name and flight as to where I was going within 14 days, my old passport, and pay the fee with expedition fee.

Probably best bet is to make an appointment with a Passport Agency near you.

Now this is what I was looking for! Something that I can trust (one of those online passport websites didn't even have SSL on their credit card page). Thanks.

Agreed. A co-worker won a roundtrip vacation from Portland, OR to Italy. She needed to leave in 5 days and had an expired passport. So she drove to Seattle and got it renewed the same day. She had to bring several documents and pay a fee but she got it done in 1 day.

I just called and scheduled an appointment for my dad for next Wednesday at 9 AM (They were booked up until this point). I'm just glad that this agency is less than an hour away. The fee is a small price to pay considering the amount spent booking the trip.

So my dad will be able to walk out of there with a renewed passport in hand?

Took me a month. Mailed it in. You could do the expedited renewal, 2 weeks maybe.
