Quickest way from .ape to .mp3

I cataloged all of my cds into .ape format and put them on my hard drive so I never have to reach for a cd again. The problem is that I have an mp3 head unit in my car and I often will burn cds to take with me. Rather than rummaging through the box w/all my cds to rip the cd again, I just convert from .ape. I found the OUT_LAME plugin for Winamp that makes encoding to mp3 simple (especially doing a batch of mp3s or an entire album) but it's awfully slow, even on my P4C @ 3.0GHz. It'll generally take around 15 minutes to reencode an entire 60 minute album, give or take a few minutes. Are there other programs/utils/plugins that will do this?

CDEX's feature list says it supports APE. Try one of its transcoding options. I've found it to be speedy, and generally a great piece of software. I've never used APE (nor have I heard of it until now) - just simple CD/WAV/MP3 encoding.
