So I'm migrating to a new lappy that runs Vista Home Premium. I installed 2007 Quicken Premiere OK, but when I try to import a backup file from the old XP machine (on a USB drive) I get a fatal error. Anybody know what's up?

Have you tried in compatibility mode? I believe i received the same error when trying to use the 2005 version with vista I did upgrade to 2008 and that did fix the problem but I'd assume compatibility mode would work as well and run as admin should help.

Right click the shortcut, pick properties, then select the compatibility tab. You can select various O/Ss through there. You'll probably want XP SP2. This isn't a guaranteed fix for anything, but sometimes this can get stubborn programs to behave.

Update Quicken to the latest release:

Check your release version of Quicken by selecting Help menu > About Quicken. The release is displayed below the Quicken logo. The latest version is Release 5 (R5). If your version of Quicken is Release 4 (R4) or earlier, download and install the manual updates starting with the next highest release patch and work up to R5 (manual Quicken updates are incremental, not cumulative):

Release 5

Release 4

Release 3

Release 2

After downloading, right-click the manual update file(s) and select Run as Administrator before applying the update. Under Vista, you must select the Run as Administrator option even if you are logged in to the computer as Administrator.

After applying the updates (if required), follow the application note below to run Quicken as Administrator, then use the online update feature from within the Quicken program before attempting to import your data again:

OK, I fiddled with the Compatibility mode....no luck with XPSP2 or Win95!!!

I checked the release version, its R5. After that I selected "Run as Administrator", but still no luck.

I still get error code 6932, whatever that is?

Any other ideas?

Copy the backup files to local disk and try importing from there. Alternatively, drop them into the appropriate Quicken folder and just try opening the Quicken user file rather than using the import feature.

Well. its good news and bad news. I copied the Quicken files to a USB drive and was able to successfully open the by double-clicking the QDF file in File Explorer. However, when I try to save them on the computer I still get a fatal error.

I'm beginning to suspect that the error is not in Quicken as I've noticed some other quirky behavior:

1. Opening a webmail on www.excite.com inevitably fails the first time, but retrying always opens it the second shot.
2. Ditto for certain functions on Facebook.
3. MY HP AIO will scan very nicely in color, but I get a fatal error if I try to scan in greyscale.

I've been ascribing this stuff to Vista minor bugs, but perhaps its a bit more serious that that.

Any chance KASPERSKY 7-IS is causing the trouble?

...and thanks for the suggestions so far.
