A few weeks ago there was a thread about the Logitech Quickcam Express (refurbished) for $17.95 at Overstock.com w/ free shipping... Just thought I'd let everyone know these were back in stock (just got restocked sometime this afternoon, they didn't have 'em this morning). Got me one last time, just ordered a second one now.

*EDIT* if you can get a UPC (I don't recall my refurb coming w/ one), there's a $10 MIR from Logitech on these, too! http://www.logitech.com/lang/global/rebates/rebate2540.pdf

These cams any good? Compared to Intel or Kodak (3Com is out of the cam biz so no need for comparison).

Its a shame 3com is out of the biz.. Vistacam or vista (you can find them easily on the web) have stopped making these, and they made the cams. The only thing 3com did was make a USB model and package the software together. Nevertheless these were top of the line, and I love mine. The limitation on the camera was the USB, not the camera itself. I would advise people to wait for USB2 or firewire or buy one of these PCI port cameras, because the bandwidth of USB was too slow for my taste. I mainly use mine for taking still images of ebay stuff, but of course you can webcam chat too.. I just wanted to use it like a security camera but if you set the resolution high enough to be very useful there is not enough bandwidth but for like 4 Frames Per Second. Still $18 not bad but just keep in mind it may not be very useful! I would get the 3com model or none at all until usb2...

They're pretty decent for $18... Picture quality's not too bad as long as there's adequate lighting - in low light it can get pretty grainy. Framerate may not be great - I honestly don't know, I use mine as a snapshot cam on my little personal website. I like mine enough that I ordered another, if that tells you anything...

IIRC, Intel and 3com have (had) better lenses and sensors than the Logitech, so will give a little better picture quality... But they cost more, and for cheap bastards like myself, that outweighs the picture quality gains... ^_^ It's only a webcam - for high quality pictures I've got my real digital camera...

Firewire webcams'll be nice for those seeking good full motion video, but we may not see those for a bit (with most people on dial up, they can't even keep up with a USB camera's framerate)... USB 2.0 cameras we might never really see a lot of - isn't WinXP passing on USB2 for Firewire?
