I am not sure when my webcam stopped working...I have installed a new CPU and moved over to Firefox as my primary browser.

First problem I noticed is my MSI live update causes major problems at startup (like 5-10mins until icons appear), this was due to a IE dependancy as the default browser. I chose to remove live update as I prefer to search for updates myself anyway. If it's not broke don't fix it.

Then I noticed a beep anytime I shut down, I can't say if it hasn't been doing it for a while though.

My webcam though was no longer in device manager and trying to uninstall the drivers gave a -5001 error, mentioning PAPP in the error message. You can search for these terms and see many are having the problem.

Solution was to install the latest drivers...however even they fail at the default installation. You have to manually delete the deldev.exe file in the bin subdir and then it installs fine.

However you will have a shutdown beep which I don't care for (it's the windows default beep sound).

Anyone workaround this yet?

The shutdown beep has been a known issue with Logitech for at least 8 months. They claim it's some software server shutting down. I had multiple issues with my Quickcam to the point that I gave it away. I remember, however, having to totally strip out the software, reinstall with the camera disconnected, and reinstall (many different times).

Is there a generic vidcam driver that can be used?

I can use my other applications to capture photos and video as long as it's in device manager and working.

I tried to install the Quickcam driver only, but it still installs their software. Going to Add/Remove programs and just selecting the Logitech Programs and leaving the driver unselected uninstalls the driver anyway.

The camera worked great esp in low light previously and was my resource to capture audio as well.

still looking for this, the same issues finally made it to logitech forums.

I found it works fine on a fresh xp sp2 install buts dies after the express updates (there is about 100 of them)...

Upgrading to the Quickcam 5000 Pro (IMHO inferior for my use since it's a fixed focus camera) solved the problems of both the beep at shutdown and having to replug in the usb camera each reboot.

I like using my webcam to snap off a quick shot for email or even an auction, rather than drag out my digicam.

I am using the Quickcam software version 10.5.1
