A friend from work said that the dvd drive in their xbox (not 360) is not working. Can this be replaced with a standard PC DVD-rom drive. And do you need any special tools to open on up. Thanks for the help

No, you can't use a standard DVD ROM drive. You also need a torque screwdriver (can't remember the exact size off the top of my head) to open up the XBox. Try looking on xbox-scene.com to see if anyone has any replacement drives for sale.

You guys are quick, no dongle. Anything weird about changing one out, I know my way around a computer decently well, never messed with an xbox (or even played one)

Once the Xbox is open, it's like installing a PC DVD drive. It's a standard IDE cable with a molex connector.

Nope, you need a special drive. They go for as high as $50 for a stock drive. I recommend getting a hacked faster model. Does he have a modchip in it? If so he can get an LG/Hitachi, if not a Samsung 616t will work on a stock Xbox. PM me if you need to know where to get one.

Not sure I am even going to mess with this. I pretty sure its just a plain jane xbox. Can you still buy the original xbox console?

Used...not new.

Would probably cost as much as the disk drive by itself.
