i'm trying to buy components to set up a part wireless, part wired network at work. we currently have a wired linksys router. i need to know if i should buy a wireless router or access point. i am not sure of the difference between the two. i see some linksys wireless router with 4 rj45 ports, how many computers can i hook up to the wireless part?

thanks

Wireless Router have a HUB which is an Acess point
Access point is just a wireless HUB.
If you have already have Wire Router; You will need just need a acess point.
Old days they use to come seperate.
These they come as a built in feature.
But these day Wireless Router are lot cheaper and faster then Wireless Acess point.

It depends on the access point on how many clients you can have....I think about 10-15 is normal for most consumer lines. If you allready have a wired router you can either replace it with a wireless one or just add a accesspoint onto the network.

hm. one of the guy here told me that either a wireless router or access point can connect up to over 100 computers. it souned too goo to be true, but i didn't see any info on how many clients the wireless can support. where can i find that out?

I could be wrong I'm going off memory. Its not a hard limit, its normally based on what the accesspoint can handle. Too many connections and it'll seriously dampen performance.

thanks for the links, answered a few of the questions i had. but i still need one answered - how do i find out how many client an AP can support?

Most of the Wireless Hardware can assign more than 100 IPs.

However actual functionality Depends on the nature of the activities, and the Actual Bandwidth available.

As a very general Yard Stick.

802.11b downloading files at the same time about 3-4 people.

Just surfing few more.

802.11g downloading files at the same time about 8-10 people.

Just surfing 15-20.

YMMV.
