for trout, I would go small spinners. Ask a local shop what's been working for people if you have time. If not, take a variety of colors/blade/design types.

Mepp's Aglia, size 1 or 2, gold blade, plain or dressed hook. Trout love 'em. (if you don't have access to people who can answer your questions... this is my go-to lure)

Earthworms suck for trout, especially in small streams in hot weather. Small shiners are best and mealworms are way better than earthworms or nightcrawlers.

For lures, small spinners and spoons. Think small. VERY small. In clear water and warm weather trout are pretty finicky, nothing too flashy is going to work.

Just checking. In that case, go with the smallest (1/32 or 1/64 oz) Rooster Tail. Awesome lures...

Yup. That's what I was going to suggest - it's called a Super-Duper, and it's pretty much a makeshift spoon. Its curved on the back-end and has a treble hook. Sometimes they have too big of a treble on there and you may have to swap it out. Make sure any spinner you get is 1/16 or 1/32nd (ultra-light) size.

If you can find a Daredevil that size (another spoon), I would try that too. I also like BlueFox and Panther-Martin 1/32nd spinners, with or without dressing. I would thow everythgng you have, cause with clear skies, trout tend to get spooked easily, so even two or three cast may get their attention at first, then they will move or look elsewhere.

I never used to have much luck with spinners either, and swore at them as Satan's mischief, but then my friend once caught 10x more fish than I did, using nothing but a spinner and I was shown the light :) I even catch most of my bass on spinners.

I bought a bunch of locally-recommended spinners when I was fishing for rainbows in a lake in New Mexico last summer. The same spinners that worked wonderes there have caught quite a few smallies here in Indiana this summer.

Earthworms + PowerBait (colorful smalls balls of manmade bait in a jar)

Use both on one hook. Excellent combo for catching trout and salmon.

I have had alot of luck using mini-jigs. 1/64 - 1/16 oz sizes in many colors (orange/white) is my fav. Use about 2 - 5ft of leader then an empty cast-a-bubble or float/bobber. A little water or slip shot helps if it's windy for casting.

edit: for clarity, rig looks like a carolina rig with an empty cast-a-bubble in place of an egg sinker. Jig will hang from the float, when you jig it, it will jump and flutter down.

I hate using bait. It works, but it's so boring. I'd rather be casting and stalking trout than sitting around soaking a bait and waiting for a strike.

Hey Ophir. Do you fish around on the ocean side near SLO. I love fishing for Rockfish and Lingcod from the rocks at Big Sur.

Not yet. Unfortunately all my gear is down in LA, next time I go home, I'm bringing my stuff and heading out for some awesome rockfishing. I've been hiking out there and I cannot wait to fish those pristine waters.
