Aren't I supposed to smash the end on a hard surface to get more string out? I just got a free weedwhacker working, but I can't get any more string out. I know there is a bit left on the spool because I can see it through the crack.

depends on how it is setup.. but yes most weedwackers work that way

Turn it off... DUH... then try to push it in yourself while pulling at the string...
Also since you got it free it could be broken, have the wrong type of string in there, etc etc etc so the string won't come out.

I have tried pulling it myself with it off and the end jammed in...when I pull on one of the strings the other one gets pulled back in.

I'm gonna try to get the end off and see if it's jammed up.

Yup.

Also, the string could be mis-strung so it can't release and extend correctly.

Ewwww...I hate the double string ones.

Sure they cut well, but they are major PITA to restring.

Heh, I've got a Ryobi with the swapable heads on it. Normally I just use the cutting blade since you never have to worry about string, and it'll cut anything up to about 2" in diameter without any problems. But, for edging around the house and garden trim you need string. I've gone three summers now without needing to replace the string.

I remember looking at the instructions on how to respool it, and I think I'd have a better chance following the diagrams on how to build an a-bomb than I would restringing the dual string setups. I think when the time comes, I'll spend the extra couple bucks for the replacement head that's already pre-strung .

I've got a Ryobi with the dual string setup. Replaced the string last weekend and it took me 10 minutes.

I have a Homelite that's like that. I need to get some of the cool attachments for it. :)
