Do webhosts tell you how much BW you have used or do they wait till you exceed to tell you? Im referring to 1and1 specifically.
 
if you have cPanel it tells you - it usually is a few hours behind and seems to update sometime around midnight each day.
 
most tell you in some way or another in your control panel, whether it be CPanel or not.

If you can't find it, ask your host.

If they won't help you find it, refuse to pay all excess bandwidth bills...
 
Yes, it does depend on your host and what software they use. For instance, all of our shared hosting servers run on cPanel / WHM. By default it updates once a day, but we changed it so that it updates four times per day. We also have it so that it sends warning messages when customers are nearing their limits.
