eventually i'll getthe o'reilly VPN book.

but in the meanwhile, can someone explain this to me. i really don't get it.

when do you need a VPN? for example... me, if i need something i use ssh or sftp to gain access to a system or to transfer a file. now, how does a VPN differ from this? what more can a VPN do? would i use a VPN if i had a laptop and i wanted to access my home PDC from an outside location? i mean... i really don't understand what you'd use a VPN to do.

its handy in windows to sync files and directories from europe when you office is in the US.... It provides a secure tunnel, its cool... I use SSH to do the same things in linux since I think its easier, but in windows a vpn can be handy and is easy for end users to get aquainted with since it works like dial-up networking. You can also restrict terminal server usage to only over the VPN. Another use would be for file syncing of servers in multiple geographic locations, or to have multiple office's act as if they were on the same, secure network without the added expense of frame-relay or other dedicated service.
