Quick UD question...

So I just started UD and i joined TeamAnandtech. My question is, does it just use spare process cycles? Does it create any performance hit at all? And finally, should i turn it off when i start up a game or do benchmarks? Will it make a difference?

Thanks

Depends on your computer mostly... I have a xp 1700+ (GF3 ti200) and I leave it on all the time. When I bench marked in Serious Sam 2 and a couple other games I was only losing 2 or 3 fps. Not worth messing with in my opinion. But I have a friend whos computer isn't as friendly with UD.

So yes it does only use spare cycles, the performance hit is small on most systems, and try it in games with it on or off and see if you notice any slowdown. If you do, run a few benchmarks to check and decide which way you want to do it.

BTW Welcome to the team!!! 🙂

I found that SETI was more noticible but UD didn't. When I ran UD and SETI together SETI would run and UD would not. I also have a AMD XP 1700+ and have had a GForce 2 GTS and a GForce 4 4400 and no notice except a few frames difference. So in this case it would only seem to be a question of the processor being a lower speed say a P3 800mhz would it then have an impact that we haven't seen in our faster processor configuration. In the other room I have a setup like that BUT the video card is so slow a ?TNT? that I don't believe its a worthy test subject. The computer does have a new fast hard drive and is upgraded to Win XP home and has 5 possible user accounts it is running DF (the other not F@H project) with the -rt switch which allows up to 150 megs of memory access for the DF project abd this switch run at twice as fast. I did a search of the jpg and gif files to make sure the daughters wern't on porn sites and when it went to view a picture it was slow maybe cause it was on for days without a restart and who knows how many users were logged on and what clutter had ben run ib java app games.

But to the best of my time spent on the UD cancer research I liked it. I just went on to something else cause I figured the UD lukemia being over and now millions of participants I could move on to another area that had need of growth potential. In the folding there will be races for the lowest ??? can't recall the word and then I'll decide who I want my power to be behind but it will be a representation of the folks here at Anandtech.

I really haven't noticed any appreciable hit by running UD. When I ran 3dMark2001 the score seemed to remain unchanged. (I did not scrutinize the result closely for subtle changes... only looked for any significant hit) In the games I run, I don't notice any change either.

The only thing I did notice is that on occasion, when I ran a scan with AdAware sometimes it would pause for a very long time (don't know if it was stuck or just slowed because I quit when it balked) and the same thing happened with a PCCillin virus scan. So from those experiences, I decided just to exit UD long enough for the scans.

I voted "no biggie" but really didn't explore enough to have any input to your question beyond these experiences.
