I live in a college dorm so I don't keep much food in my refrigerator. Anyway, I had some pickles in there, and somehow the plug came loose and was out long enough for everything to be at least room temperature for a while, for maybe a day or 2. The pickles were open. It says they should be refrigerated after opening. Are they safe to eat?

Peace of mind and safeguarding your health are worth more than a jar of pickles IMO. Just toss em and buy more. They're only pickles after all.

That's what crossed my mind first, but maybe I'm just being a baby.

But since I would need to take a shuttle bus to go get my car to go get more, I don't think I feel like spending almost an hour to go get a jar of pickles

Try growing bacteria in a superheated mineral bath, or in 800 degree waters at the bottom of the ocean. :p

What type of pickle? Half sour, dill, sweet? It makes a difference.

Pickles will keep for years unopened, that is the point of pickling. A few days opened won't hurt them or you.

Consider that until just recently, many "general stores" had large pickle barrels in the middle of their stores where you could have the clerk grab one out of the un-refrigerated barrel for ya. AFAIK, no one ever got food poisoning from them...

im pretty sure i've seen hickville gas stations with a giant ass jar of pickles and selling them for 50c/pickle. thats totally unrefridgerated and probably more unsanitary that what you have so you'll be good to go.

If you can't tell whether food is bad by smelling/tasting it, Darwin laughs at you.

Try 'em. Anything which smells fine and tastes fine isn't going to kill you.

Those bacteria die off quite nicely in the human body, so...
