quick router question

A friend has purchased a laptop and a router, and has a cable modem.

My question is this - initially, I'll hook the PC up to the router, set up the ip info, etc, etc...then I want to disconnect the laptop from the router and use the router's wireless capabilities....

I don't need to have the router connected to a PC, correct? Once I set it up, and it's connected to the cable modem, I should be ok in removing it, right?
