So I decided to give the new iFuntastic 3.0.3 software a try tonight on my iPhone with the 1.0.2 software. iFuntastic lets you do a variety of software mods such as adding your own ringtones or installing custom software. So here it goes:
Installation:
Unzip and run, that's it. You need a Mac to run it. Version 3.0.3 supports both PPC and Intel Macs. The first thing you need to do is connect your iPhone to your Mac and "Unshackle" it. You may have heard of jailbreak; this is like a permanent version of that. Unshackle it once and from then on all you have to do is plug in your iPhone and modify it however you want instantly in iFuntastic. The process takes maybe 10 minutes to do, just follow the instructions provided.
Modifications:
You have four mod options:
1. Home Screen
2. Carrier Logo
3. Ringtones
4. File Manager
Let's start out with the Home Screen. They really went to town on this one. In this section, you can modify your home screen to your liking. That involves changing both the graphics and icons. It also supports up to 4 separate home screens, called pages, for up to 80 applications. Here is a laundry list of things you can do:
1. Show the grid
2. Use Home Screen Background as Wallpaper
3. Change the background color (any color with color picker)
4. Use an Image as background (includes auto-resizing; even supports drag-and-drop from Safari - check out Theme My iPhone or Interface Lift)
5. Hide the bottom bar
6. Show or Hide names and icons
7. Rotate home screen clockwise or counterclockwise
8. Rearrange icons, or install or remove icons
So you can basically customize your home screen any way you want. For example, I got rid of the Stocks icon because I never used it and changed the wallpaper. You can also use the Home Screen area to install applications. To install, just drag the app to the programs bar, then drag the app's icon from the programs bar to the home screen - you can put it anywhere you want! I've got the NES emulator installed where Stocks was. Here's a quick-and-dirty pic from my iSight camera:

It looks great! The next area in iFuntastic is the Carrier Logo. This is that AT&T logo in the upper left corner. You need two of them; one for dark backgrounds and one for light. You can make full color logos if you want, too. Here's a guide on how to make your own in Photoshop:

Howard Forums has a whole thread devoted to custom carrier logos:

Next is Ringtones. This couldn't be simpler; just drag and drop your audio files into the file area. You can drag and drop files directly from iTunes. You can also snag the free 30-second previews from the iTunes Music Store with a little creativity (see the Ringtone notes on the side + Google) so that you can essentially get any ringtone on iTunes for free. If you want to tweak a particular track, just use GarageBand on your Mac (if you have a DRM-encrypted song, just burn it to an Audio CD then re-import as an MP3 in iTunes). You can crop the song to be as long or as short as you want as well as fade it in and out, or do other things like mixing if you want. The possibilities are endless. If you want to do the tweaking on a PC, Audacity is a great free program for doing just that:

Last is the File Manager. This lets you browse your phone in an Explorer-like fashion. It's a teensy bit slow but it works just fine. You can add your own folders as well as copy over files. For example, if you install this NES emulator:

You will need to create a directory like this:
/var/root/Media/ROMs/NES
Since the Media folder already exists, you'll need to create a folder for ROMs and then put the NES folder inside of there. After that, simply copy over the ROMs you want to the NES folder. Pretty straightforward. One great feature of the File Manager is the big folder icon in the middle of the file browser - it has shortcuts to let you jump to specific sections like System Sounds or Mail.
And that's pretty much all there is to it. It's basically bulletproof and has a ton of features. Oh, and there's a button on the lower left that will show up when you need to restart, such as after installing an application. Pretty slick! Did I mention it's free?
