Quick resume question... (listing college GPA)

Orsorum

Lifer
If you have a few running start credits from high school (10 quarter credits), should you include the institution itself on your resume (4.0, Blah Rock Community College attended 2001) or just average the extra .3 or so into your GPA? I know for the law school admisssions process they just add them together, but for your resume I'm assuming you list them separately.

I wouldn't put my GPA on my resume at all 😉

I never put it on. That seemed to work to my disadvantage though in interviews. They always assumed that it was bad but when I told it to them, they acted impressed. I think that an unlisted GPA might do more harm than good if you have a reasonable GPA.

If you're going to list it (and I think you should), I wouldn't average them together. I'd go with whatever each school officially lists as your GPA. Unless it's not above 3.0, according to my technical writing teacher a few semesters ago. Go with overall GPA if it's above 3.0; if not, go with the major GPA, which hopefully is if the overall isn't; if not, then go with none, if I recall correctly.

I list my major GPA only because it's a 3.4. My overall GPA sucks and I will only give it when asked (usually comes up because I list the break time in my schooling).

I heard that typically if you don't include your GPA the employer will assume that you have a low GPA. Luckily, the weight of your GPA diminishes as you gain work experience. But to answer your question, I would approach it like a tax return. Put the value most beneficial to you as long as you can justify it somehow 🙂

just make sure the gpa you list is the same as the one that shows up on your transcript, in case the company wants to look that up.

if they don't include the extra .3, then i would just ignore it, unless you want to mention the credits under your high school if you list it.

I have a 3.27 without, a 3.33 with. I don't think it makes a difference at the moment, I should be able to bring my cum up to a 3.2 or so after this quarter, and for the moment that's all I need.

i have a 3.0 major, 2.3 overall 🙁

i screwed up BIG TIME when i was in engineering 🙁...then i took the easy route out and transferred to computer science (which, lets face it, is a joke compared to computer/electrical engineering).

I was a math major for a year. It's sick, I can plot my grades and see an inverted normal distribution, starting my second qtr here and bottoming out Spring of 2003.

Well of course EE is harder than CS, but I wouldn't say it's a joke.
