In a DHCP environment does a 24-port switch require an IP number assigned to it, would you also indicate if 1 is sufficient - if not what is the correct number (a brief explanation on why would be appreciated). TIA.
 
A switch does not need an IP address to perform its role in life of switching frames.

The IP address is for management/software downloads and telnet access to the switch. Handy to have so you can troubleshoot but not necessary.
