my ipod took a dive, must be the summer weather or something because my electronics all seem to be struggling.

so i need a new harddrive for the ipod, but since theyre $80 i figured i might as well try the mobile pro listed in that ebay ad above.

i would use it with an external usb drive, and could also use the pcmcia slot for wifi. i have no need to carry this mp3 player on me, it will sit inside a bag next to a radio. i figured this would be an excellent option since i could have as much harddrive space as i wanted.

should i bite on it?

Because it's far less portable, will not last nearly as long on batteries, and isn't nearly as user-friendly as an iPod? 😛

They're cool toys, I'm not debating that - but using one as a standalone MP3 player wouldn't be the greatest idea. Also, how do you plan to power this external USB drive?

Yeah I have worked on a mobile pro 900 for a client.
The battery goes pretty quick when you use PCMCIA (and even when you don't). Also drivers can be a PITA because it isn't exactly the same OS as pocket PC.
Not all software will work with this H/PC. Also, internet browsing is painfully slow. Much slower than a comparable pocket pc. (maybe it is the screen size?)

not worried about internet, or anything other then playing MP3's and FLAC. im sure it will.. and ill be using it with a milwaukee 18v cordless kit with that radio so i can power this devive off the radio's batteries. it wont matter how fast it drains because i can plug a new battery in anytime. i dont know, to me you cant get a better mp3 player for $100. you cant add your already-paid-for external harddrives to an ipod. and ipods are just too expensive and wont play flac natively either.

also, can the screen be put in sleep while its still running?
