I know 939 is approaching in May. I was just wondering once 939 comes out, will it take over 754 and will 754 be obsolete? Are motherboard manufacturers going to stick to 939 and stop 754? My concern for all this is because I'm interested in a64 2800+, but am worried that the chip being socket 754 may hurt me down the road when i need a new mobo. Will they make a 939 version of the a64 2800+? arghhh any help is needed...are there any other differences between 939 and 754 is that 939 will have dual channel support?

here's the deal...

the socket 754 will not die... if you look at the roadmap, amd plans on using the socket 754 as their "value" socket/chipset? i dunno...

if you look at the roadmap, you can see plans for athlon XP's to be released for socket 754 up to 2005 in their roadmap..

so will they be obsolete? as a value line.... no...

if you want top of the line, socket 939 will be the way to go ... but i say go socket 754 right now :)

one thing to note is that dual channel socket 754 boards will be released soon :)

what are the benefits of a dual channel socket 754 board? I thought the whole point of the extra pins for 939 were for the second memory controller on the 939 A64's. That way you'd get huge increases in memory performance with dual channel unlike trying dual channel with the XP's of now. Can you have a 754 A64 with two memory controllers? If not, then wouldn't the increase due to dual channel be only a few percentage points like the XP's we have now?

I'm waiting for 939 myself :)

to each his own!!! :)

exciting times are around the corner... new sockets by both amd and intel... pci-x ...

but i still say that socket 754 is worth it especially considering that there won't be any 1 meg L2 cached A64 939's or at least that's shown in the roadmap...
