Could bad drivers for a Diamond SupraMax USB modem cause CPU usage to be extrememly high (80%+)?

Or is it the nature of USB modems to take a lot of CPU usage?

Thanks.

USB devices, by nature, tend to take up some CPU usage. However, if you are experiencing 80%, it could be the drivers. Bad drivers communicate less efficently with the modem, thus necessating the need for more CPU usage. Try getting the newest drivers, or drivers that you are positively "good" and will work with your system.

The drivers that I am using are Diamond's "Beta" driver which I had to get from their FTP site via Diamond's tech support. They state on their website that the SupraMax USB does not work with XP (I'm using XP pro right now), although they have beta drivers on their FTP site. Strange huh? But, Diamond's peripheral quality really sucks and their driver support is even worse (Diamond Viper II). I'm not too thrilled with the modem anyway. Maybe a new modem is in order ...
