Quick question

Hello, I recently received a Radeon 9600 256mb 8x agp card as a gift to replace a 32mb NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX400 card. I went to install it and found that this new card does not fit into the slot. 🙁 There is a tab in the slot where there is no such space on the new card. It looks like if I flip it around it might fit, but I didn't want to try it. This is probably an obvious question, but I read somewhere on here something about backwards compatable? What does that mean?

Thanks for any info! 🙂

The 8xAGP RADEON 9XXX cards are only usable in 4x/8x AGP slots that use the 1.5V AGP standard. You probably have an older 1x/2x AGP slot on your motherboard, which is why it won't fit (don't force it, whatever you do).

Also, that card you got is pretty bad. The 256MB versions of the 9600-core cards are underclocked compared to the 128MB versions, and can't run anything effectively at a high enough resolution to use the extra memory anyway.

There is no AGP-2x compatible version of the 9600--all require AGP-4x or -8x. Maybe nVidia cards are compatible with AGP 2x. You should check their website to be sure. This card may be compatible with your MB, will be faster than a regular 9600 in most ways, and it sells for $120 shipped at NewEgg.

It may also require a more powerful power supply than you already have, however. What wattage is your power supply rated for (235W, 250W, 300W)? What computer are you putting this card into (CPU, MB, RAM, OS)? Maybe we can suggest a better upgrade path for you.

Thanks again! 🙂

If by "get the 128mb compatable card" you mean get a 128mb 9600, it's not going to work. None of the 9600's are compatible with 2x mobos.

Yeah, I looked and there is no 9600 that will work. 🙁
My computer is getting up there in age, it is a pentium III, 750mhz, 512 mb ram, windows XP pro. I know the best path would be to upgrade completely, but it just isn't in the budget yet, unfortunately.
Thanks, guys, for all the tips, and help! I really appreciate it! 🙂

Hmmm... that card looks great too, and looks like it will fit into the slot that I have. 🙂

Oh, and I have a 235w power supply.

Well, I went to a local computer store, bought that card and a 350 watt power supply just in case!

I'll let ya know how it goes! 🙂

Oooops, forgot the update.... It works great, the entire swap took about 20 mins, and it's running good. Not much of a difference, though, but that's probably due to such a slow processor. Oh well!

Thanks so much for all your help!

Yeah that should be pretty much be expected. You should be able to run with more details, aa/af, etc now though.

What is aa/af? Not sure what that stands for! LOL

BTW read through this site today, and have to say... WOW! There is more info here than I could ever possibly cram into my brain! What a great site, and very well designed! I'll have to pass this one on to friends! Thanks again for all the help and such a great site!
