At the moment, the hot pick on the AMD field is the Athlon 64 3200+. I found what looked like a relatively good price on a mobo/CPU bundle and posted it over in Hot Deals, if you want to see.

All things considered, a 2.8GHz P4, even with 533MHz bus, is a good foundation for gaming. I'd swing the dineros towards a top-of-the-line ATI video card if I were you, unless you're already there and still want more.

Would a amd 2800 barton be better then the p4 2.8 ghz 533fsb for gaming? What will be most stable for gaming and over all?

Then I'd say it depends on what game. It would also depend on what platform you ran the CPUs on. For AMD, the fastest platform is nForce2 Ultra 400. For Intel, it's currently i875P in most cases with i865PE as a good alternative PROVIDED you equip the i875P or i865PE platform with dual-channel DDR.
